Dew Tour Skateboarding
Copywriter
The Dew Tour is one of the premier skateboarding series in the world. With the top athletes competing for high-dollar prize money at every location, the action is always turned up to eleven. The addition of the Team Challenge in 2016 meant that the individual athletes would also compete with their board sponsor teammates for additional prize money. This project entailed writing detailed profiles of all the athletes as well as company bios for the companies participating in the Team Challenge.
"In the year 2000, the skateboard industry was hit over the head with a sledgehammer by a newly formed company that was as raw, unhinged, and crazy as anything that had been seen in a decade. When it comes to being the loose cannons of skateboarding, Baker is always firing."
Riders
With a stable of athletes all with their own story, personality, and vibe, each bio had to be researched and crafted to convey those points in a way that was both interesting and informative. Each bio contains personal info, professional highlights, and fun facts as well as all the athlete's social media information.
Teams
The teams invited to compete in 2016 are all staples of the skateboard industry. Combined, their stories comprise a good chunk of modern skate history, so their contributions to the sport could not be overstated. Each bio was researched over a variety of sources to include information that wasn't readily available in one location previously. As a passionate skateboarder myself, it was crucial to give these brands the respect they deserve.
"With joints of rubber, bones of steel, and abilities to jump down building-size drops with the greatest of ease, Aaron "Jaws" Homoki is like skateboarding's own superhero. when he Ollied the enormous Lyon 25 in France, It earned him another Thrasher cover shot and a place in history as one of the gnarliest skateboarders ever."
"Birthed by the the Gonz Father, Mark Gonzalez created bLind Skateboards in 1989 following his departure from Vision Skateboards. See what he did there?"
Plan B Profile
"Since the brand's inception in 1991, Plan B has always represented the most progressive skateboarders in the world. Formed with the idea of making skateboarding's own dream team it was revealed that Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Rodney Mullen, Sean Sheffey, Pat Duffy, Colin McKay and Danny Way would make up the initial roster. The company then proceeded to change the skateboarding world with its impressive lineup of videos, such as Questionable, Virtual Reality, and Second Hand Smoke. In 2005, Plan B sent shockwaves through the industry yet again when it announced that Paul Rodriguez, Ryan Sheckler, Ryan Gallant, PJ Ladd, and Brian Wenning would be the new dream team of the re-launched Plan B. In 2014, the brand continued its track record of mind-blowing team videos with the release of True and introduced the world to the relatively unknown phenom, Chris Joslin."
Nyjah Huston Bio
"Skateboarding is in Nyjah Huston's blood. In 2006, he was the youngest contestant to compete in the X Games at just 11 years old. The pint-sized ripper, with his signature dreadlocks, wowed the skateboarding world with contest wins, banger video parts, and ender-worthy tricks before he was able to drive. By 2010, he was competing in the Street League Series, along with the Maloof Money Cup, two new contests that had bigger prize purses than ever before. The following year he claimed TWS’s 2011 Readers’ Choice award, the Best Street award, and the Best Video Part award for Rise And Shine. Thanks to his unwavering consistency and technical prowess under pressure, in 2012 Nyjah took home the coveted Dew Cup in Street. His contest domination has earned him the title of "most prize money ever awarded a skateboarder", but to put to rest any rumors that he was off the streets, in 2014 he dropped DC's Fade To Black and followed by Thrasher's OMFG,in 2015, which left jaws on the floor and racked up millions of views worldwide."
